Recently, the beloved Senator
Ted Cruz compared climate change activist to “flat-eathers”. He stated that
scientist once believed that the earth was flat and that anyone who denied this
fact, such as Galileo, was a heretic. In other words, Ted Cruz is discrediting
scientist who raise awareness for global warming because scientist can be
wrong. He later stated that in the 1970’s, an article was written about global
cooling. Scientist were raising awareness of a cooling phenomenon and said that
the earth was heading into a cooling period. Ted Cruz states that scientist
then retracted their statement because evidence did not line up with their
claims so they shifted to global warming. In the eyes of possible presidential
candidate Ted Cruz, scientist are truly advocating for government control of
energy sectors.
As a young scientist in
blooming, I can say that Senator Cruz’s statements are not only grossly
inaccurate but extremely ignorant. First and foremost, the issue at hand is not
solely global warming, but climate change. Climate change includes extreme fluctuations
in weather. This includes extreme heating and cooling. What
many politicians fail to see is that there has been a drastic change in global climate
due to the increase emission of CO2 creating a greenhouse effect. To put it in
simple terms, the sun radiates energy onto the earth. The earth then releases
the energy back into space at the same rate. However, the emissions created by
our major fuel sources create a cap over the atmosphere. This cap traps the
suns radiation on earth lowering the rate of release of energy leading to an
increase of radiation (heat) on earth.
Global warming is not
something made up by left winged liberals who want totalitarian rule over
energy sectors. It is a serious issue effecting our entire planet. The fact
that men and women like Ted Cruz are the leading politicians of this nation is
very upsetting. There are two huge issues
at hand here, the lack of proper scientific education in the United States and the
inadequacy of our elected officials. The United States ranks 14th in
education but 3rd in development. United States ranks 20th
in science education and is below average in reading and mathematics. This
level continues to decline. This is definitely not due to developmental issues.
We have the capability of improving our educational system but have not done
so. This can largely be attributed to those in power, elected officials who are
themselves uneducated. As a country, we
are carelessly destroying our planet and our human race by willingly ignoring
issues at hand. We must advocate for full social revolution. We must usher in
an era of renaissance before it is too late.
