Another form of gender stratification, that i noticed in our society today, came to my recognition in my teaching elementary education class. In this class we are pared up with a young boy or girl and we interact with them in groups and observe them over a month span. Before being pared up with my elementary partner we observed the behaviors of the children in groups and team settings. Many days this meant separating the class into two groups, boys and girls. The teacher of this class is of the male gender. While working with the entire group as a whole i can see a difference in the teachers excitement compared to the times where he is working strictly with just one gender group. While the teacher was working with the female group explaining the rules of the activity being asked of them, the teacher seemed to be quieter and more laid back. He spoke in a softer voice and seemed more focused on the intensity of the boys group. While when he worked with the group of young boys he seemed to show more excitement and speak in a louder more pumped up voice. Much of the time he would work with the girls he would just shout good job and keep it up, but on the other hand he would get very into the action of the boys activities. The only time the teacher ever really got involved in the activities was when he was participating in the boys games. This shows gender stratification because the teacher was much more enthusiastic working with the group of males than the females. If i were a part of this elementary group i would feel as though my teacher were making me feel left out or of lesser importance than the guys. I think that teachers should be fair in their pupils and ensure that they are evenly dispersing their attention out to all students. By showing more enthusiasm working with the boys it made the girls less ecstatic to want to participate in activities and feel as though their participation wasn't important to their teacher. In order to be sure that all students are working and having fun teachers should not hold favorites or stratify their students in any way. Gender stratification should not be expressed in an education setting because it makes students feel of lesser importance compared to others and may decrease the quality of some students work due to the set back of feeling inferior. If you take a moment to look around you will notice many other forms of gender and other appliances of stratification among our communities today. In order to move toward a more equal society we should be pursuing ways to eliminate stratifying individuals by gender, race, and globally.
