My Experience with Diversity

Winchester, Illinois, Scott County,  population 1,700, amount of ethnic and racial diversity, none. This is where I grew up, a small town farm girl in rural Illinois. For demographics of Scott County follow this link; Scott County Demographics.  My whole life I was never really exposed to much diversity until I came to DeKalb. Many people I have met since I've moved to DeKalb are from the Chicago area which is a very diverse area. They think I am crazy when I say I am so not used to this, that I am used to being around people who are almost exactly like me. It took me a while to get over the culture shock of moving from little Winchester to DeKalb. For demographics of NIU follow this link; NIU Demographics But now I love it here. I love the diversity. Meeting new people I would never have met other wise. Learning things about other cultures other than mine. I realized that my world was so small before I moved to college and I am lucky now that my world has expanded.
