My Development

Piaget's Stages

As I sit here I try to remember specific telling examples of when my life was borderline exemplary of one of Piaget's stages of development. Of course, there's no way that I can remember any examples of the sensorimotor stage in my own life, I was far too young. I might be able to pull out a few examples of the preoperational stage, such as the long, irritating period of my life when all that I asked my exasperated parents was the worst of all questions: "why?" I remember a few specific examples of when I was within what is considered the concrete operational stage. I remember playing outside in a pool and using a bucket to splash water at my dog. I flung water at my dog until I lost grip on the bucket I was using. I immediately resorted to using my hands to splash water. Somewhere I understood that the amount and volume of water that I was flinging was not the same. Something I hadn't even considered in the past now seemed like a revelation. Of course I'm now hopefully in the post-operational stage, where supposedly I think abstractly. Honestly speaking, however, my thinking hasn't been more concretely focused in my life, with all the homework, tests, and social activities that I have to juggle.
