Time
For Change
Gender plays a key role in the work
force. Whether we want it to or not it certainly does in all aspects. There are
more men in the position of CEOs or higher positions than there are women.
According to Buzz Feed’s article, This Campaign Wants The U.N. To Elect Its
First Woman Secretary General by Shyamantha
Asokan, she points out the problem at hand. So, what makes this article so
unique? I mean, we all have a pretty good understanding that men seem to be
given more power than women. There are many people fighting for gender
equality. We also are informed of this from the material in the textbooks and
by discussions in classes. Sociology class in my particular case. As we
discussed in class, men are simply given more power. They are viewed as the
head of households and therefore are given higher salaries and positions in
order to sustain their families. On the other hand, women are not because they
may have kids or may not be seen as dedicated because of housework and kids.
One example we talked in class was who the school calls when a child is sick? They
call the mother. What I found interesting while discussing this in class was
that while men obtained these higher positions and earned a more significant
amount of money there are more women attending college and obtaining a college degree.
This particular article is interesting because the organization at hand is none
other than the U.N. The same organization that fights for gender equality and
even has a campaign geared towards gender equality. BuzzFeed is correct once
again. Not only do they show pictures of Ambassador Emma Watson, who is the
face and led of the He for She Campaign, but they also included tweets from the
U.N to support their case. The tweets reflect the views they have and fighting
for women to get these higher positions instead of men. While when it comes to the
internet it is pretty easy to be skeptical it is quite hard to question things
if every media outlet says the same certain things. This as a result, makes
BuzzFeed quite credible. For example, I knew about Emma Watson’s contributions
through television way before reading this article. The article is simply
asking the U.N to elect a women in the CEO position of the organization and
stand by what they are fighting for. In
simply terms they are demanding they led by example. After seventy years of
male dominance it is time for a change as the article points out. What also hints
at making the article believable is they form in which it is written.
Throughout the article, the author never attacks or tries to depict a negative
image towards the U.N. The author simply states what appears to be facts and
informs the public of this issue. They start off by even praising the U.N in a
sense for all the work they are putting in for the fight gender inequality and
even state they have been a major force for seventy years and end with praising
them and stating they are doing much better than other private organization
when it comes to high positions for women and gives them the benefit of the
doubt. Maybe the U.N will be led by a women in 2016.
