Pride and Prejudice

I've had the opportunity to watch Pride and Prejudice a number of times. While I prefer to watch the 1940 version for its intimate acting and vintage cinematography, I also enjoy watching the 2005 version with Kira Knightly. Based on the novel by Jane Austin, the era clearly depicts the disparity and inequality in genders and education. While its portrayed as a love story there is also an economical difference in relationships when it comes to two different classes. There is a symbolic view that is somewhat sexist from Mr. Darcy, a handsome wealthy man, that like the title state pre-judges a women of what he called "inferior birth". There is a clear separation that people of different economic backgrounds could not be associated with each other as Mr. Darcy's Aunt depicts it. Besides class difference, there is also a gender disparity in which women are not allowed to inherit money. This was clearly shown when the Benette family had a cousin choose someone to heir their wealth. As Elizabeth Benette put it "because the estate passes down to him and not us poor females". The sarcasm in her tone of voice is what made Jane Austin famous for noting that women at that time period were also considered inferior to hold any type of power. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie its one of my favorites for its love story portrayal, but most importantly the strong female character that was portrayed is what I love. The fact that Elizabeth being that prideful could have an influence on a man that is the prejudice shows a bit of the authors feminism. It also shows everything that was wrong in that era with women, education, class, and wealth.
