Parents are the first teachers

There are many things that are told to us growing up. Everyone seems to have an opinion on how to parents. Even when your own have made mistakes in the past. However, it is always good to maintain an outside perspective every now an then. Sometimes it takes a stranger to give the best advice and a story to fully understand our mistakes.

Dr. Kelly Flanagan is a Licensed Psychologist in Illinois that has dedicated a good portion of his career providing stories through his blogs. I came accross one of his articles about what a father would say to his daughter on her wedding day. His views not only as a family man, but as a psychologist bring up important questions.

Primarily his blogs are on Marriage, Counseling, Parenting. It gives some insight into his life, since most of his articles are based on personal experience or something that occurred through the day. Gender roles can be seen in his blogs for example the role of his son or daughter. Religion can also be seen, somewhat christian belief or at least a belief on a higher power. Most notably the amount of time and importance that he implies on family as well as education in family.

Education seems to be the key factor in his writing. Either it be education to the public or education to individuals. The ability to express and also inform his personal views through a public forum are the sole purpose of most bloggers. He as a professional also provides research to back up most his information on topics that are in everyday household. Sure, they lack some background knowledge on other things such as families of different culture, beliefs or even practices, but his main audience are those that can afford educated leisure time. I personally enjoy reading his blogs because it gives me a small hint of some kind of high culture idea than the one I come from.
